2 Strand Twists w/a TWIST!

21 Aug

Heyyyy 24sevencurls  world!  I have been working and relaxing, waiting patiently for this baby to come! I did get a chance to do my hair on Sunday though and wanted to share what I did!

Of course it’s 2 strand twists (I do them a lot because they can last me for a while, at least a week or sometimes two!).  So here’s what I did:

  1. On freshly washed, & conditioned hair (I’m still contemplating doing the curly girl method and not using shampoo any longer…doing my research still…) I parted my hair in 3 sections vertically.
  2. I knew I wanted a mo-hawk type of effect so on the sides I did 4, 2 strand flat twists & did a bantu knot on the ends (I re-wet the section I was twisting w/a spray bottle of water & EVOO, added a little shea butter & Fantasia IC Gel for hold on the edges) (Next time I might make thinner sections for the flat twists to make it look a little neater…)
  3. For the middle I did semi-mini 2 strand twists (re-wet section w/water/EVOO, shea butter & a little Fantasia IC Gel for hold). When I do 2 strand twists, I always have to use a clip to hold the start of the twist together so that it will stay (the  part that is closest to my scalp is where I’ll put the flat clip so the hair doesn’t get poofy at the beginning of the twist).
  4. I put the twists on medium rollers & sat under a hooded dryer on low for about an hour, then put my scarf over my head to let it dry more overnight (you know my hair takes FOR LIFE to fully dry!)

Here is how it turned out!

Today I twisted some of the mini twists from the middle section together and made a few messy buns because a few of the rollers didn’t hold last night BUT it’s all good, still looks nice to me AND my hair is off of my neck today which is always a good thing. Anyhoo, hope you like it and will try the style for yourself!

The never-ending twist-out!

26 Jul

Hello natural hair folks! I’ve been away…well, away from the blog for a while 😦 BUT it’s all for a greater reason! Carrying a baby is hard work man!

Anyhoo, here are some pics from the 2 strand twists  & flat twists in the front that I did on Mon., July 16th (my bday!!!) using shea butter & Fantasia IC gel, did the twist out on Sat., July 21st and wore it 3 different ways that day for my maternity photo-shoot & baby shower in VA! I had sooo much fun that day (definitely could never be a model though, I never know what to do w/my face!)

Same simple twist out, 3 different ways:

  1. full twist out- I used a wide pick at the roots to make it a little more full
  2. side pinned twist out- just used bobby pins to lay it down on one side
  3. high messy bun- used a ponytail holder to put it all up on top of my head and I pinned down the ends

Enjoy!

A Little Girl and Her Hair…

20 Dec

This little girl’s hair used to seem so simple, hair grease, hot comb, bows & barrettes (my mom may tell you a different story though…haha). Anyway, I was looking through some pics and figured I’d share.  These are random pics of me & my hair from a baby to high school.

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

30 Nov

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

1. On washed, conditioned & detangled wet hair, I parted a 2 inch section of hair in the front and did a flat twist from right to left.

2. With added conditioner on the back section I brushed back the sides into a puff on the top of my head.

3. Tuck in the end of the flat twist into the puff’s ponytail holder & you’re DONE!

“Let’s Talk About Hair” RBTL

24 Oct

“Complex emotional relationship that women have  w/their hair, not to mention the influence of the messages that black women, in particular, receive about their hair AND the overall issue of adolescent self-image…”

In the episode, “Let’s Talk ABout Hair”

“Recap Ep.104: Kaci plans to revamp her hairstyle to impress a boy, causing a hair-raising tangle with Carla. “

*Click here to see the recap*

My response:

I actually like this show. Yes, I may be a bit partial to Tracee Ellis Ross and anything she is involved with ever since ‘Girlfriends‘, not to mention her mom is Diana Ross & who doesn’t love her AND their hair is ALWAYS fabulous!  The show is growing on me though, especially since this episode. I literally laughed out loud when the daughter Kaci had a TON of Vaseline on her forehead as she was about to throw a relaxer in her beautiful kinky-curly natural hair, she really had a TON of Vaseline for no reason.  I thought this episode gave great insight to the everyday dilemma’s that African-American women may go through because of their hair and even at a young age.  The episode dealt with stereotyping (typical starring role in the play had to have “long, flowing hair”), self-image, self-esteem & the idea of women making choices for themselves and not because of someone else’s desires.  I was excited to see ‘Braxton’ Christopher B. Duncan on the show until he told Kaci, “the Queen of the elves has long & flowing hair…not…that” then I wanted to hit him.  Also, Carla (the mom) made a good point in her demonstration of a 1950’s wife tending to her husbands every aching need.  Yes, we need to tend to our men but NO we don’t have to lose our mind, choices, opinions OR our hair, however we choose to wear it, in the process.  Tune in to the show this week Tuesday, Oct. 25th at 10pm on BET.

What was your fav part or least fav part of this episode?

Fav quotes:

“I changed my hair for ME not for a boy.”

“Complex emotional relationship that women have  w/their hair, not to mention the influence of the messages that black women, in particular receive about their hair AND the overall issue of adolescent self-image…”

“the Queen of the elves has long & flowing hair…not…that.”

“…you’re perfect the way you are, you should avoid being with anybody that wants you to change.”

“once you start loving yourself it always gets easier”

“I DECLARE HEALTHY HAIR CHALLENGE”

10 Oct

So I’ve decided to take part in the DENaturalistas “I Declare Healthy Hair” Challenge” from today until Dec. 31, 2011. I will try my best to do maybe a weekly or monthly update of my progress…we’ll see how that goes! Maybe I’ll just update the blog as my journal to keep track of my progress….hmmm. The main things that I need to change are:

-no more wash & go’s (it’s getting cold now anyway, so that’ll be fine)

-drink more water (I sometimes forget…)

-make sure I’m taking my vitamins (I usually do)

-3-5 days of 30 minutes of exercise (believe it or not…I’ve been slacking for about a month with my workouts…womp womp…)

-5 servings of fresh fruits, 3 servings of veggies (not sure how many I usually have)

-create a detailed hair regimen (Im lacking the “detailed” part…I usually just go with what I feel for that day or week…lol)

SO I need to work on these for the hair regimen:

pre-cleansing  (a.k.a. pre-poo) treatment,

sulfate-free shampoo (CHECK!),

protein conditioner (need to check on this, I use Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner),

A leave-in conditioner (CHECK!),

A water-based moisturizer to hydrate daily (Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, I assume that would work for this, gotta use daily though),

An oil & butter-based moisturizer to seal daily (gotta work on the “daily” part)

Scarves & More Scarves Inspiration!

8 Oct

This look was semi-inspired by a post on A Curl’s Best FriendScarf Bun and Swoop Tutorial
Wash & Go inspired by Naptural85 (however the overnight idea doesn’t work for me too well because my hair takes for LIFE to dry; I think this was the 2nd day of an old wash & go):
1. Part hair into 4, 2 strand twists
2. In shower, undo each twist & finger detangle under water, add Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner then twist back up in shower
3. After doing each section, dry with t-shirt while still getting ready
4. I undo the twists & shake ’em out in the car before work
I bought this pink polka dot scarf from the Gap back in high school, shout out to the Prime Outlets in Williamsburg!
Decided to bring it back out in a different way (I’ve never worn it as a bow in my hair) kinda cute!  Yah for shopping for more scarves soon! I love her bigger scarf hairstyles too, take a look: A Curl’s Best Friend Hairstyles!

“Side Eye Moments” Reaction Part I

7 Oct

I saw this post on curlynikki.com and thought it was pretty fun and SOOOO common:

“Side Eye Moments”

Skinny Kenny goes on to explain 1 of his own “side eye moments” (moment when someone gives you an underhanded compliment or just disses your hair to your face on the sly like its ok…):

Skinny-Kenny
 writes:

“I was at a very nice restaurant for my mother’s birthday. I got up to go to the bathroom and an older white woman stopped me and told me how much she loved my hair. She told me how much I looked like “little Richard”, and asked if I was a singer. The conversation was going well and I was about to go about my way. And then she said, “Ohh and we are ready to order now, I’ll have the lamb and she’ll have the salmon.” *SIDE EYE* You are going to have some… go somewhere with that mess. My hair doesn’t make me a server for you.”

LOL, how is this lady gonna compliment him and then straight take it back as she assumes he’s her waiter…..?! Too funny.  I had a conversation with a kid today about my hair (mind you, kids say WHATEVER they want to because they’re just innocent little kids right…NOT!)

I took out my 2 strand flat twists that were in the front all week that I had been wearing like a head band and pinned them to one side, while the back of my hair was in the same wash & go style I had worn all week. So, granted I was a bit “un-confident” in my hair because it was a little different than usual for me & I knew my wash & go wasn’t too fresh. So the little girl, who’s sweet as pie usually I promise, she tells me:

Little Girl: “You look different from the last time I saw you.  Your hair was tied back last time now it’s just soooo curly. Did you want your hair to look like that?”

Me: “wait, what do you mean ‘do I want it to look like that’?”

Little Girl: “Did you want it to look like that? I’m  just asking?”

Me: “Well is it messed up? Yea, I meant for it to look like this, girl we bout to go to the bathroom and fix it! LOL”

The little girl is a sweetheart I just wasn’t expecting her to say that. Yes, I get my hair tips from 5 year olds LOL.

What underhanded/sideways hair compliments have you gotten? (Is it even still called a compliment if they just take right back from you, lol?)

My hair today 10/7/11:
