Oldie But Goodie!

24 Aug

A friend of mine tried out naptural85’s Summer Fun Curly Fro tutorial and hers turned out so well that I decided to try it too. Of course I had to modify it a bit bc I usually just have a day to do my hair & I can’t get away with a scarf at work in the office too well soooo I had to try & speed up my drying time. Because my hair is so thick, air drying doesn’t always work too well unless I have at least a full day & night to allow it to dry. So, I may use a diffuser or sit under the hooded dryer to speed up the drying time.

My sis-in-law made me some flax seed gel to use & I really liked it! It goes on smoother than the Fantasia IC gel that I usually use. The only challenge is that I didn’t get to use it all before I think it went bad (it smelled funny in the fridge…lol).

So, I used flax seed gel on freshly washed hair, followed the tutorial video below & sat w/it under the hooded dryer for about an hour, and slept in a scarf overnight. In the morning….it was still a little wet so I diffused it some to wear it like this:

P.S. My FAV part of the tutorial was something that I had never even thought of doing before but will do all the time now, she put a scarf around the front of her hair to hold it down while she manipulated the rest of her hair & that worked wonders because the front of my hair doesn’t always do what the rest of my hair does and I end up pinning the front back later, so why not start with it that way?! Genius!

I tried it again the next week but did more of a bantu knot than the pin curl & it turned out like this:

I think if I were to let it fully dry & did the pin curls it’d turn out similar to hers but it still will just define whatever your natural curl pattern is.

Check out her tutorial video here:

Enjoy!

Fierce Hair & Fierce Prayers…

28 Sep

My Aunt sent me a link to this video and I loved it so I had to share it with you all.

“It’s called, ‘I Will Wait For You’ by a P4CM Official Poet Janette…ikz shares a beautiful piece during Lyricist Lounge 4 on “Waiting”. Check out www.P4CM.com for more poems…”

My first reaction when the video started was… “oooo her hair is FIERCE!”.  Then when she opened her mouth I said, “wow…I can relate to sooo much of that…and so many people need to hear this piece to gain a new perspective or refresh their memory on how to…wait, on God, love, the spouse that he has ready or even waiting for you.”  Everything is in His perfect timing, although we may not understand it all, God’s definitely got a purpose & a plan for all of our lives, trust Him (I’m still working on that…let go, let God, ya know)!

I love the flow of her poem and how she went back & forth referencing scriptures & the Word while talking to God & to her mate-to-be.  Hope you enjoyed this piece too, take a look at some more of her work (and make sure you peep her beautiful natural hair!):

Pure Path Interview

*Quotable*:

“…he had a form of Godliness, but…not much…I mean he’s close….enough”

“…arteries so clogged with MY will it blocked HIS will from flowing through me. So, I thank Christ that His blood pressure gave this heart an attack that flat-lined my obscured vision, put me flat on my back, through my ignorance He saw, so through my sternum he sawed & cracked open my chest to transplant Psalms 51:10.  A new heart & a renewed right spirit within. So now I fully understand, better yet, I thoroughly comprehend how much I need to wait…for You.”

“I will no longer date, socialize, or communicate with carbon copies of you to appease my boredom or to quench my thirsty desire for attention and short-lived compliments from sorta kindas.  You know he’s sorta kinda right, but sorta kinda wrong…his first name Luke, his last name Warm.”
“…who flirts with the ideology of “can you just tell me how much i can get away with and still be saved”

“I will no longer get weighted down from so-called friends and family talks about their concern for my biological clock, when I serve the AUTHOR of time; who is not subject to time, but I am subject to Him.  He has the ability to stop, fast forward, pause, rewind at any given time…”

“1+1+1=3 which really equals 1 if you add Him.”

“I wont need to identify you by any special Matthews or any special Marks cause His word will be tatted all over your heart.”

“…For Ethnic Textures That Gives Depth…”

7 Sep

Maybe I was the only one that made a face when she said “…for ethnic textures that gives depth!” why does it have to be ethnic? Anyhoo…Bed Head new “texture-specific” products; cute how-to video.  I usually do the same technique with my conditioner if I’m in a rush but I don’t always use the diffuser (because of time…) however  I may use this technique with the diffuser & finish up some old products I already have before purchasing this new one from Bed Head. Love her highlights! Take a look!

FUN Labor Day Weekend!

6 Sep

Hope you ALL enjoyed this nice little break for Labor Day (I think we forget what Labor Day is for…I did).  I hung out with some old UVA friends and had a great time.  These are two of my friends, Morgan & Lynn and YES they have beautiful hair & have done a TON of different things with their hair.

Ash, Morgan, Lynn

Currently, Lynn has all natural hair and straightens her hair because that works better for her. She’s more of a 4b/4c hair type.  Lynn was the go-to person in college if you wanted braids, cornrows, micros, relaxers or pretty much anything done to your hair, Lynn could do it (and have you sign a waiver saying that she’s not responsible for anything that happens to your hair during the process…cover your back LB!).  Morgan has a relaxer in her hair and just got this new cute hair cut which is very versatile, she’s more of a 4b hair type too.  You will be hearing more from my buddies & their hair!  Also, Lynn gave me some rods to try out on my hair since she doesn’t use them anymore, so you’ll be seeing those soon!  How was your holiday weekend?!?! When’s the next holiday…Thanksgiving?!…too far away…smh. LATER!

Once Upon a Time in a Land Far, Far Away There Were 113 Pics on Facebook…

3 Sep

And so it began here…on the illustrious Book of Faces (don’t click the link because you know you’re already logged on, lol).  After posting hair pic after hair pic in a Random Hair Deal album…I decided to make my love for all things ‘hair’ into something not so random.  My goal so far is to have fun, help people to love their hair and learn more about my own hair along the way.  My husbands goals for the blog are a little different and that’s why he’s such a great business man (need help saving money ask about him!)  So, peep the pics and throughout this blog I will tackle some of the pics posted in more detail as far as products and style process so you can enjoy them too!

Preserve Diffused Hair Overnight With “The Pineapple”

2 Sep

So, you diffused your hair on Monday and don’t want to diffuse again for the rest of the week?  Then use the “pineapple” method to preserve diffused hair overnight.  Basically, for medium-long hair you put all of your hair on top of your head with a loose scrunchy or headband (looks like a pineapple top).

In the morning I took it down and fluffed the back to make it come down with some Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Cream on my fingers put on the shoe lace to push back the front & added a flower headband (I’ll discuss my issue with some of these headbands later…think “age appropriate” headband; I’ll explain later).

My results:

Enjoy your “pineapple”!

Hello natural hair, curly girl, blogger world!

1 Sep

Welcome to my natural hair blog & thanks for checking me out!  After 27 years of hair do’s & PLENTY of hair “don’ts”, numerous random natural hair questions about transitioning, how-to’s & products…I’ve finally decided to take my Facebook “Random Hair Album” and make it not so random.  I will be bringing you into my everyday hair challenges & hair ‘hook-ups’ (you know those days when you don’t know exactly what you did to your hair but…you hooked it up!).  This is my 1st post and my hair today (8/31/2011) :

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This was my ‘starting over’ hair because the night before I did not redo my 2 strand twists (I got home super late).

For this style I first co-washed my hair with Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Conditioner in the shower, rinsed the conditioner once and reapplied leaving some of it in the hair, especially the ends.  I then used a t-shirt (no frizzies) to dry the drippys and sectioned my hair into 4 sections.  Each section I applied a quarter-sized amount (maybe more) of the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and a small amount of the Fantasia IC Gel.  I used the EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) on my scalp and sprayed the very front of my hair with a little water to help lay it down.  I tied the brown shoe lace (yes its an old shoe lace) around my hair twice and was on my way to work.

Note: I am still experimenting with the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to figure out what styles I like using it with the best and I am surprised that I did like the moisture & softness it left my hair with after being diffused. It did help to define the curls as well, I’ll try it again without the gel and see what happens.

Have you used the Shea Moisture products? If so, what are your fav’s &  what hasn’t been working? I’d love to hear about it!

LATER!
