Oldie But Goodie!

24 Aug

A friend of mine tried out naptural85’s Summer Fun Curly Fro tutorial and hers turned out so well that I decided to try it too. Of course I had to modify it a bit bc I usually just have a day to do my hair & I can’t get away with a scarf at work in the office too well soooo I had to try & speed up my drying time. Because my hair is so thick, air drying doesn’t always work too well unless I have at least a full day & night to allow it to dry. So, I may use a diffuser or sit under the hooded dryer to speed up the drying time.

My sis-in-law made me some flax seed gel to use & I really liked it! It goes on smoother than the Fantasia IC gel that I usually use. The only challenge is that I didn’t get to use it all before I think it went bad (it smelled funny in the fridge…lol).

So, I used flax seed gel on freshly washed hair, followed the tutorial video below & sat w/it under the hooded dryer for about an hour, and slept in a scarf overnight. In the morning….it was still a little wet so I diffused it some to wear it like this:

P.S. My FAV part of the tutorial was something that I had never even thought of doing before but will do all the time now, she put a scarf around the front of her hair to hold it down while she manipulated the rest of her hair & that worked wonders because the front of my hair doesn’t always do what the rest of my hair does and I end up pinning the front back later, so why not start with it that way?! Genius!

I tried it again the next week but did more of a bantu knot than the pin curl & it turned out like this:

I think if I were to let it fully dry & did the pin curls it’d turn out similar to hers but it still will just define whatever your natural curl pattern is.

Check out her tutorial video here:

Enjoy!

2 Strand Twists w/a TWIST!

21 Aug

Heyyyy 24sevencurls  world!  I have been working and relaxing, waiting patiently for this baby to come! I did get a chance to do my hair on Sunday though and wanted to share what I did!

Of course it’s 2 strand twists (I do them a lot because they can last me for a while, at least a week or sometimes two!).  So here’s what I did:

  1. On freshly washed, & conditioned hair (I’m still contemplating doing the curly girl method and not using shampoo any longer…doing my research still…) I parted my hair in 3 sections vertically.
  2. I knew I wanted a mo-hawk type of effect so on the sides I did 4, 2 strand flat twists & did a bantu knot on the ends (I re-wet the section I was twisting w/a spray bottle of water & EVOO, added a little shea butter & Fantasia IC Gel for hold on the edges) (Next time I might make thinner sections for the flat twists to make it look a little neater…)
  3. For the middle I did semi-mini 2 strand twists (re-wet section w/water/EVOO, shea butter & a little Fantasia IC Gel for hold). When I do 2 strand twists, I always have to use a clip to hold the start of the twist together so that it will stay (the  part that is closest to my scalp is where I’ll put the flat clip so the hair doesn’t get poofy at the beginning of the twist).
  4. I put the twists on medium rollers & sat under a hooded dryer on low for about an hour, then put my scarf over my head to let it dry more overnight (you know my hair takes FOR LIFE to fully dry!)

Here is how it turned out!

Today I twisted some of the mini twists from the middle section together and made a few messy buns because a few of the rollers didn’t hold last night BUT it’s all good, still looks nice to me AND my hair is off of my neck today which is always a good thing. Anyhoo, hope you like it and will try the style for yourself!

The never-ending twist-out!

26 Jul

Hello natural hair folks! I’ve been away…well, away from the blog for a while 😦 BUT it’s all for a greater reason! Carrying a baby is hard work man!

Anyhoo, here are some pics from the 2 strand twists  & flat twists in the front that I did on Mon., July 16th (my bday!!!) using shea butter & Fantasia IC gel, did the twist out on Sat., July 21st and wore it 3 different ways that day for my maternity photo-shoot & baby shower in VA! I had sooo much fun that day (definitely could never be a model though, I never know what to do w/my face!)

Same simple twist out, 3 different ways:

  1. full twist out- I used a wide pick at the roots to make it a little more full
  2. side pinned twist out- just used bobby pins to lay it down on one side
  3. high messy bun- used a ponytail holder to put it all up on top of my head and I pinned down the ends

Enjoy!

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

26 Apr
I actually like the rain though, it’s kind of necessary. Anyhoo, I didn’t want to have the wash & go look again today so I undid half of the front flat twist and then did 7 big 2 strand twists with the back half of my hair using this sample that I got from the DE Naturalistas event:

Curls Unleashed™ Take Command™ Curl Crème helps shine, define and moisturize your curls without shrinkage. This product is great for twists, twist outs, coiling, freestyles and updos.

• Moisturizes
• Defines Curls
• Anti-Shrinkage
• No Flaking

This product does not flake and stretches your curls. The Take Command Curl Crème also does not contain petrolatum, mineral oil, SD alcohol, or parabens. Packaging is BPA free and recyclable.

OK so that’s what is NOT in it, so what’s IN it?

aqua (water), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, glycine soja (soybean) oil, polyquaternium-11, cetearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, glycerin, propylene glycol, peg-12 dimethicone, cyclomethicone, dimethiconol, amodimethicone, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, carbomer, vp/va copolymer, pentamethylheptane, dimethicone, dimethicone crosspolymer, laureth 4, laureth 23, triethanolamine, tocopheryl acetate, parfum (fragrance), benzyl salicylate, citronellol, cinnamic aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, d-limonene, lilial, linalool, lyral, methyl ionone, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol, bht, ci 19140 (yellow #5), ci 15985 (yellow #6).

Ingredient Attributes: paraben free

Not too bad at all, (besides the big words that I don’t know and the fact that I’m really not HUGE on things having to be completely all natural ingredients) as long as I know the 1st few ingredients (first 5 I can actually say or recognize) then I’m good to use it.

So here’s my rainy day ‘do’, I’ll probably take the twists out on Saturday:

Check out another girl’s review & twist out here:

Also, peep the company’s YouTube video (that doesn’t really show you much but, cute slogan *I watch too much Mad Men*):

Samples galore!

23 Apr

I thoroughly enjoyed my self at the DE Naturalistas Naturally Redefined event! There were cute hair styles, good music, met some great girls and the best part….FREE SAMPLES!!! I got home, went through my bags and tried to organize everything by type of product (shampoo, conditioner, body stuff, maintain curls etc) and I was able to make a bag of goodies for my sis-in-law to try out (we always share hair stuff). Since it had been more than 2 weeks since I had washed my hair & it had begun to look like a blizzard on my dark shirts….(that’s so gross) I decided to wash my hair the next morning & these were some of the samples I used:

20120423-185255.jpg

I liked all 3 samples. The Design Essentials shampoo didn’t strip my hair (sulfate free), Karen’s Body Beautiful Leave-in conditioner had a mild smell (or either I couldn’t really smell it) but it was a nice moisturizing conditioner and the cashmere curls smelled like grapes (feels smooth on your fingers). Now, I can be a bit heavy handed when it comes to using products but with a sample size, you can’t really do that. So this wash & go I did was good at home, but ended up frizzy during the day I think maybe because I didn’t use enough of the cashmere curls & the leave-in. My wash & go’s usually get a bit frizzy but not this much by the end of the day:

Morning hair:

Afternoon hair:

20120423-190621.jpg

Next day hair (slept with puff on top of head “pineapple”)

20120423-190732.jpg

One thing I did notice is that the curls in the back did last better than my usual wash & go styles overnight. So that’s a plus, the less work I have to do, the better it works out for me.

Have you tried any of these products?
On to some more samples soon.

Bliss Elements, Natural Hair & Turkey!!

20 Nov

I enjoyed my 1st natural hair event at Bliss Elements Spa & Salon with the DE Naturalistas! The stylists were super nice & down to earth, the “green” salon was gorgeous & they had red velvet cupcakes (I loooove cupcakes) and strawberries & champagne! It was a much-needed girls night out w/hair talk, good laughs & delicious treats. The salon even makes their own fabulous smelling, natural products the Shea Butter smelled like cake batter & there was a conditioner that smelled like chocolate!) So, for the event they split us up into four groups & we switched between 4 stations:

1. ear candling demonstration– If you’ve never seen this done before…its so crazy. They put a burning candle in your ear and somehow it gets all the wax, dust, pollen out of your ears. It’s supposed to help w/sinuses, allergies etc. This was what came out of one persons ear…

2. Angie w/hair product info– she talked a lot about whats in the natural products that they make at the salon, tips on using color (consult your stylist), tips on how often to get trims (consult your stylist) I think she said every 6-8 weeks though and many more topics

3. rod set demonstration– she used the orange perm rods on a girl with natural hair & her curls came out gorgeous (I have the purple rods but want to try the orange or jumbo black ones 1 1/4″). She also shared that to get the roots straight depends on the amount of tension you put when you’re rolling the hair onto the rod.

4. blow drying, flat-iron & pin curling demonstration– blow dry wet hair, use a paddle brush or brush that’s compatible for your hair type when blow drying, only use the concentrator attachment (not the comb attachment). 1 thing I didn’t know about pin curling is that you can pin just the end of the curl instead of pinning the whole circle or curl (hard to explain in words but when you see it done you’ll understand, maybe I can post a pic later)

Best part was hanging out with my sis-in-law Lisa AND winning one of the door prizes!! I won a bottle of Creme of Nature’s Oil Moisturizer with Argan Oil which I will tell you about over the weekend when I try it out.

P.S. If anyone is getting me a Christmas gift….a gift card to this salon would be amazing!

P.S. “Turkey” is in the title of this because I really dropped off a turkey in the parking lot to my sis-in-law because she’s doing Thanksgiving dinner for the crew and we laughed about it, natural hair & turkey’s its all good!

My hair this week:

My “Retro Braids” Variation via A Curl’s Best Friend

5 Nov

Good day!

Yesterday I watched the Retro Braids Tutorial on A Curl’s Best Friend and figured I had some time so I’d try it out.

Her Tutorial Video:

My variation 🙂 :

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So, I like how it turned out. I did try numerous times to do it exactly like she did in the video but…it was just a little different and I need to work on my cornrow skills and doing the flat twist from both sides…it turns out better if i go from right to left instead of the opposite. Mine may look a little different too because I did it on wet hair (hers looked like it had been stretched maybe from a previous twist out).

1. On washed & conditioned wet hair, part the hair in half across the head for the front section then part down the middle of the back section.

2. On the front section from right to left do 1 large flat twist.  Pin the end of the flat twist on top of your head behind the  front.

3. On the back section do 2 flat twists going straight down on both sides, then pin the ends in the middle around each other.

4. I used Fantasia IC Gel on my edges and wrapped it in a satin scarf to lay it down more & to sleep in.

I’ll probably try it again after a twist out or on dry/stretched hair…& get my opposite twisting game up!

Quick twist & side puff

4 Nov

Quick twist & side puff

This is my go to style if I am in a rush; simple & cute!

1. Usually done on wet hair after washed, conditioned & detangled. Make an off centered, side part.

2. Add Fantasia IC Gel to sides and brush down edges.

3. Begin large twist on one side and finish on the opposite side.

4. Brush all the hair to the end of the twist and put in a ponytail holder.

5. For a longer lasting curl, I did mini twists on the section in the ponytail holder and put them on purple perm rods  over night. Took them out in the morning and voila! (To make it even more simple, I’ll just leave it out in a puff and add some leave-in conditioner instead of doing the twists & rods [Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Conditioner or Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner…why is the name so long!]

“It’s Been A Long Time, We Shouldn’t Have Left You, Without A Dope Beat to Step To…”

3 Nov

Hola 24sevencurls family! Oh how I’ve missed you & the natural hair online world! I’ve been away for a bit busy with just life but…I’m back and I’ve got a few things to share with you!

I. I Declare Healthy Hair Challenge Update…oh boy, I’ll be honest.

II. Nov. 19th event 7pm-9pm at Bliss Elements Salon & Spa

III. Natural Hair friends & family influence

IV. Protective style & new accessory

I. I Declare Healthy Hair Challenge Update:

I’ve read that it takes 14 days to develop a habit…however maybe we can bend the rules a bit 🙂 .  I started the challenge on October 10th to maintain protective styles, eat healthy, drink 8 cups of water/day, exercising at least 30 minutes 3-5 times/week and a lot of other simple rules (guidelines here) and I’ve been doing…OK with this whole thing. Hopefully, this weekend I can find time to do an official protective style, 2 strand twists that will last me a while.  I’ve been doing well with drinking plenty of water, taking my vitamins, pre-pooing with this lovely coconut oil from my sis-in-law (I don’t know where she got it but I NEED to get some more!) However, the things I need to work on…EXERCISE! You know there’s an app for squats, push-ups & sit-ups  on android phones…(there’s an app for pretty much anything now). Anyhoo, I’ve been somewhat using these apps as a daily exercise routine…*old track teammates don’t judge me* but the DAILY aspect is what I have to get together! lol. I’ll do it, for real, maybe get back on my P90X 😐 no, no, seriously! 🙂

II. Nov. 19th event 7pm-9pm at Bliss Elements Salon & Spa

The Delaware Naturalistas are hosting an event on Nov. 19th at Bliss Elements Salon & Spa (heard rave reviews about this salon). Promo & Tickets:

Join us on Saturday, November 19, 2011 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Bliss Elements Salon & Spa as we enjoy two-hours of natural hair styling, demonstration and education.   This fabulous event is brought to you by deNaturalistas and Bliss Elements Salon & Spa in conjunction with the I Declare Healthy Hair Challenge.

I’ve never actually been to a natural hair event so this will be my first.  I’m so glad that I’ve connected with this Delaware group because I was beginning to think that I’d have to travel to Philly or MD for anything natural hair, but little Delaware is creepin’ on a come up.

III. Natural Hair friends & family influence

Ever since I decided to forego using relaxers I never thought about the domino effect or influence this decision may have on my friends and family.  I found out maybe a year after I stopped using relaxers that my mom (hey ma!) stopped using relaxers too! She flat irons her hair because she likes to wear it straight but it looks just like mine when that water hits it!

Mom, Jonalyn & me shopping!

Also, my sis-in-law Lisa is “natural hair stalking” the web now and she even got her hair cut at Bliss Elements and wants to go to the event this month! 🙂 I’m excited! AND Lisa always has random new hair stuff in her bathroom (you know I peep in that cabinet every time I come over…) trying to see what I haven’t tried out yet that I can scoop from you (‘ppreciate it!)  Lastly, my mother-in-law, Bernice, I hear that she MAY be thinking about going natural too! I haven’t heard this directly from her but from her relaxer & washing stylist, my dad-in-law (oh yes ladies, he does it all  just for her, relaxes & washes her hair since 1978).  Bernice has had long beautiful hair ever since I’ve known her and she’s old school too uses grease and rollers each night, then puts her hair in a scarf.  Her hair would be SOOOO gorgeous in its natural state (it’s wavy when its wet even with the relaxer…my hair NEVER did that). So, I’ll keep giving her the good word on this natural hair experience.  To all my friends that have encouraged me, expressed how I’ve helped them and have been following my natural hair journey since the “random hair deal” facebook album…THANK YOU & YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION TOO!

IV. Protective style & new accessory

Here’s a look at a random protective style I came up with from just messing around with my hair.
1. with wet hair (washed, conditioned & leave-in conditioner) part hair into 3 sections across.
2. do 1 big flat twist across the 1st front section and pin on top of head
3. do about 10-15 medium-sized 2 strand twists in the 2nd section of hair
4. place the 3rd (back section) in a bun on top of head for a little more fullness
5. place 2nd section of 2 strand twists over bun
I wore this for maybe 3 days and then took the flat twist out of the 1st section of hair  and pinned it behind the bun to wear to an event:

What have I missed? How’s your IDHHC going? Have you found any new hair accessories that you just LOVE???!!!
