The BIG Twist OUT…

9 May

THE BIG TWIST OUT!

AND

THE BIG PAY BACK!

This was my theme music when I took the twists out because I think I left them in too long and it was all rainy…my hair decided to pay me back for leaving ’em in for so long and it just wanted to be puffy!

“gotta deal with you, gotta deal wit ya!” (p.s. I love old soul music if you didn’t know) “I don’t know karate but I know ka-razy!” -King of Soul James Brown

Puffy twist out (it wasn’t so bad, just not what I usually want it to look like):

Sooooo, since I wasn’t too thrilled w/all this puffy hair, I decided to do more sections (8 in the back instead of 4) and flat twist them. I also used the same product again:

So here’s what I did and here’s what I came out with…

So, the key to getting the twist out that I like on my hair is to do more sections, use enough product (something with decent hold), don’t wet the hair too much when twisting, make sure it’s fully dry before I take the twists out or that it hasn’t gotten “wet/humid” again since the original twists and as always… “if at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again!” 🙂

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

26 Apr
I actually like the rain though, it’s kind of necessary. Anyhoo, I didn’t want to have the wash & go look again today so I undid half of the front flat twist and then did 7 big 2 strand twists with the back half of my hair using this sample that I got from the DE Naturalistas event:

Curls Unleashed™ Take Command™ Curl Crème helps shine, define and moisturize your curls without shrinkage. This product is great for twists, twist outs, coiling, freestyles and updos.

• Moisturizes
• Defines Curls
• Anti-Shrinkage
• No Flaking

This product does not flake and stretches your curls. The Take Command Curl Crème also does not contain petrolatum, mineral oil, SD alcohol, or parabens. Packaging is BPA free and recyclable.

OK so that’s what is NOT in it, so what’s IN it?

aqua (water), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, glycine soja (soybean) oil, polyquaternium-11, cetearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, glycerin, propylene glycol, peg-12 dimethicone, cyclomethicone, dimethiconol, amodimethicone, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, carbomer, vp/va copolymer, pentamethylheptane, dimethicone, dimethicone crosspolymer, laureth 4, laureth 23, triethanolamine, tocopheryl acetate, parfum (fragrance), benzyl salicylate, citronellol, cinnamic aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, d-limonene, lilial, linalool, lyral, methyl ionone, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol, bht, ci 19140 (yellow #5), ci 15985 (yellow #6).

Ingredient Attributes: paraben free

Not too bad at all, (besides the big words that I don’t know and the fact that I’m really not HUGE on things having to be completely all natural ingredients) as long as I know the 1st few ingredients (first 5 I can actually say or recognize) then I’m good to use it.

So here’s my rainy day ‘do’, I’ll probably take the twists out on Saturday:

Also, peep the company’s YouTube video (that doesn’t really show you much but, cute slogan *I watch too much Mad Men*):

Using Samples AGAIN!

26 Apr

I washed my hair on Tuesday morning using the samples from before and I had forgotten that I was amazed at the thickness & consistency of the Design Essentials Sulfate free shampoo.

It’s a light honey color & about the consistency of honey but not sticky. This shampoo I feel did pretty well in my hair, I’d actual buy this (once I run out of what I already have, no PJ over here!).
I used loads of the conditioner this time & a ton of the Cashmere Curls (somebody tell me what is in that stuff anyway…?!)

For ALL CURLY HAIR TYPES – creates shiny, soft curls

Every curly dreams of healthy, defined, soft, manageable curls…Cashmere Curls is your dream come true! Formulated with pure Cashmere Extract, Certified Organic Aloe Leaf and Coconut Milk, Cashmere Curls softens, strengthens, repairs, defines, and moisturizes damaged tresses leaving them bouncy, shiny and silky smooth. By bonding to the hair shaft, Cashmere Curls strengthens 3 layers of the hair thus enhancing the curl pattern.

How To Use:

  • Use alone as a curl defining, sheen enhancing, softening, and strengthening styler (fine-medium textured curls).
  • Use under your favorite CURLS styler to soften, hydrate, enhance curl definition (thick, kinky textured curls).
  • Mixed with your favorite CURLS conditioner to deep treat your tresses.
Ingredients:
Botanically Infused H2o, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Keratin – Cashmere Extract, Certified Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Certified Organic Anthemis Nobilis (Flower) Extract, Certified Organic Coconut Extract, Bean Tree, Lactamide MEA, Acetamide MEA, Polyquaternium-7, Polysorbate 80,Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Lactic Acid, Diisopropyl Adipate, Polyquaternium-10, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance.

(to the point where my hair was white) just to get a better idea of the type of hold/defined curls I could get with these and I was pleasantly surprised. I used my diffuser because I didn’t have time to air dry but these are my mid day results (I should have taken some pics right after use but I will next time).

I gave in to the creamy crack ….. PSYYYYYCHHH!!!!

10 Apr

Haha I bet some of you believed me too (you know you’ve thought about it at least once or twice, going back to those relaxed days…NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN!)

Ok and I’m back! Had a few things going on…laptop broke,  got an IPAD on Christmas however it turned into a “babe I got this for you but I really wanted it for myself….” (essentially I don’t use it & don’t know how to that well), and we had a special surprise on new years eve…(we’ll talk more about that later)!

Anyhoo…with a lot of new things going on though I hadn’t been doing too much to my hair, make-up, clothes…I didn’t let myself go…no, but just haven’t put much time into my hair especially. So, I FINALLY went to Bliss Elements and got my hair done by the fabulous Laree!

They washed, conditioned, sat under the steamer (heard that’s an excellent thing to do on a regular basis), trimmed (cut off 3 inches actually…my hair grows faster at the nape of my neck than other places so it was much longer there [thank you vitamins] than it was on the sides so she evened it out) and flat ironed my hair! Great salon, great FREE snacks and excellent stylist!

I haven’t had my hair straightened in about a year and a half, I forgot what to do with it when I got home but she reminded me. So, here’s some of the styles I’ve been wearing (I’ll explain a few of them in detail later) enjoy!

A Little Girl and Her Hair…

20 Dec

This little girl’s hair used to seem so simple, hair grease, hot comb, bows & barrettes (my mom may tell you a different story though…haha). Anyway, I was looking through some pics and figured I’d share.  These are random pics of me & my hair from a baby to high school.

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

30 Nov

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

1. On washed, conditioned & detangled wet hair, I parted a 2 inch section of hair in the front and did a flat twist from right to left.

2. With added conditioner on the back section I brushed back the sides into a puff on the top of my head.

3. Tuck in the end of the flat twist into the puff’s ponytail holder & you’re DONE!

🙂

Lazy Hair Days…

10 Nov

Hola friends!

You ever have a lazy hair day…or a lazy hair week….couple of weeks?!  I’ve really been wearing this “retro braid variation” all week and I LOVE it because I just moisturize (probably twice this week), throw some oil on my scalp & satin scarf it up at night then take the scarf off in the morning and GO!  It’s easy, cute, sophisticated & lots of people like it. However, I need some inspiration for a new style…

A friend of mine did this…however, she’s in Cali now…I’m on the east coast…maybe I can create something from this:

By Asia Alston

Makes me miss my mini twists… 😦

What styles are inspiring you lately?

Playing With My Scarf/Headwrap

8 Nov

I tried to get  into these beanie hats…but I’m still on the fence, I think I just need to get used to it (I feel like the lunch lady when I put it on…lol).

Mom, Jonalyn & me with our hats

However, I did look into some different ways to wear a scarf (you know I peeped A Curl’s Best Friend Scarf bun & head wraps galore). I’ve had this scarf for years and never wore it over my hair for some reason. So, it’s nothing spectacular but I was SOOOO glad that I didn’t have to do anything to my hair underneath (I had 4 big 2 strand twists underneath) and could just rock the scarf & call it a day!

Scarf day 2:

How do you rock your scarf/headwrap?

Response to “We will not lose our love, our marriage, OVER HAIR”

25 Oct

I had a completely different post that I was going to work on today and then I read this article on curlynikki.com: “We will not lose our love, our marriage, OVER HAIR”

Summary/Highlights:

-married 5+ years

-pregnant – 5 months now – with…second child

-been natural almost 1 year

-husband calls and tells her they need to talk then says this:

” “WE NEED TO SPLIT UP.” Huh? What? Where is this coming from? Instant flood of tears and hyperventilating.

He never wanted me to go natural. He doesn’t like “nappy” hair. He likes straight hair. He felt that I had totally ignored his feelings by going natural in the first place, but the fact that I’ve stayed natural, despite his disdain, is even worse. It doesn’t matter that everyone else around us likes my hair. He is my husband and his opinion should matter most. When he married me I had long, straight hair. He’s not attracted to me anymore because of my hair, and therefore he felt that the best solution was to split up, instead of being disgusted with the sight of me daily. But if I straighten my hair (it doesn’t have to be a relaxer), then everything will be ok and go back to normal. Blah, blah, blah.”

-She writes out her feelings & questions for him:

“…Are you willing to give up our love, sex, family, home, future plans… all because of my hair?! NO, NEVER.

My response was: Then I cannot, WILL NOT get a chemical relaxer. So what is your REAL problem?

His response was: Well, it’s just that all the “different” styles you have been doing have been “nappy” styles. Can you please do some straight styles, and do them more often?

Of course! Why didn’t you say that in the first place boy?!

Ever since then, we’ve been back in love like usual. He touches my “nappy” hair and tells me I’m beautiful. And I still haven’t done a straight style yet, although I do plan to keep my promise – to prevent another childish rant.

Conclusion: Turns out, he just did a really horrible job of expressing his feelings. And I did a really horrible job of acknowledging his feelings. We will not lose our love, our marriage, our life together… OVER HAIR.”

My response/reaction: So my 1st response to this was, “what kind of man is he…” I don’t know a man that is THAT interested in their woman’s hair to actually split up their marriage?!?! Are you kidding me?!  She concluded that he did a bad job expressing his feelings…however, I think the root of his problem is that he has control issues and if that is the case, she needs to be careful.  A controlling man can turn into something ugly very quickly.  I’m glad she wrote out her feelings/questions (that’s an excellent thing to do so that you don’t just GO OFF) and I’m glad they worked it out.  We definitely have to take a deeper look at what we said when we took those marriage vows to our spouse before God, our family & friends.  Marriage isn’t a joke and OPEN COMMUNICATION is key to any situation.  We can not be so quick to just run away from a situation because we don’t “like” it.  Lastly, if you have children, remember that you are the example that they see everyday and they are learning every second by your actions on how to love & care for a spouse so PLEASE show them the best example that you can be!

Have you experienced a break-up or negativity from a spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend because of your hair?
