Oldie But Goodie!

24 Aug

A friend of mine tried out naptural85’s Summer Fun Curly Fro tutorial and hers turned out so well that I decided to try it too. Of course I had to modify it a bit bc I usually just have a day to do my hair & I can’t get away with a scarf at work in the office too well soooo I had to try & speed up my drying time. Because my hair is so thick, air drying doesn’t always work too well unless I have at least a full day & night to allow it to dry. So, I may use a diffuser or sit under the hooded dryer to speed up the drying time.

My sis-in-law made me some flax seed gel to use & I really liked it! It goes on smoother than the Fantasia IC gel that I usually use. The only challenge is that I didn’t get to use it all before I think it went bad (it smelled funny in the fridge…lol).

So, I used flax seed gel on freshly washed hair, followed the tutorial video below & sat w/it under the hooded dryer for about an hour, and slept in a scarf overnight. In the morning….it was still a little wet so I diffused it some to wear it like this:

P.S. My FAV part of the tutorial was something that I had never even thought of doing before but will do all the time now, she put a scarf around the front of her hair to hold it down while she manipulated the rest of her hair & that worked wonders because the front of my hair doesn’t always do what the rest of my hair does and I end up pinning the front back later, so why not start with it that way?! Genius!

I tried it again the next week but did more of a bantu knot than the pin curl & it turned out like this:

I think if I were to let it fully dry & did the pin curls it’d turn out similar to hers but it still will just define whatever your natural curl pattern is.

Check out her tutorial video here:

Enjoy!

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

26 Apr
I actually like the rain though, it’s kind of necessary. Anyhoo, I didn’t want to have the wash & go look again today so I undid half of the front flat twist and then did 7 big 2 strand twists with the back half of my hair using this sample that I got from the DE Naturalistas event:

Curls Unleashed™ Take Command™ Curl Crème helps shine, define and moisturize your curls without shrinkage. This product is great for twists, twist outs, coiling, freestyles and updos.

• Moisturizes
• Defines Curls
• Anti-Shrinkage
• No Flaking

This product does not flake and stretches your curls. The Take Command Curl Crème also does not contain petrolatum, mineral oil, SD alcohol, or parabens. Packaging is BPA free and recyclable.

OK so that’s what is NOT in it, so what’s IN it?

aqua (water), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, glycine soja (soybean) oil, polyquaternium-11, cetearyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, glycerin, propylene glycol, peg-12 dimethicone, cyclomethicone, dimethiconol, amodimethicone, c12-15 alkyl benzoate, prunus amygdalus dulcis (sweet almond) oil, hydrolyzed keratin, panthenol, carbomer, vp/va copolymer, pentamethylheptane, dimethicone, dimethicone crosspolymer, laureth 4, laureth 23, triethanolamine, tocopheryl acetate, parfum (fragrance), benzyl salicylate, citronellol, cinnamic aldehyde, hydroxycitronellal, d-limonene, lilial, linalool, lyral, methyl ionone, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol, bht, ci 19140 (yellow #5), ci 15985 (yellow #6).

Ingredient Attributes: paraben free

Not too bad at all, (besides the big words that I don’t know and the fact that I’m really not HUGE on things having to be completely all natural ingredients) as long as I know the 1st few ingredients (first 5 I can actually say or recognize) then I’m good to use it.

So here’s my rainy day ‘do’, I’ll probably take the twists out on Saturday:

Check out another girl’s review & twist out here:

Also, peep the company’s YouTube video (that doesn’t really show you much but, cute slogan *I watch too much Mad Men*):

Using Samples AGAIN!

26 Apr

I washed my hair on Tuesday morning using the samples from before and I had forgotten that I was amazed at the thickness & consistency of the Design Essentials Sulfate free shampoo.

It’s a light honey color & about the consistency of honey but not sticky. This shampoo I feel did pretty well in my hair, I’d actual buy this (once I run out of what I already have, no PJ over here!).
I used loads of the conditioner this time & a ton of the Cashmere Curls (somebody tell me what is in that stuff anyway…?!)

For ALL CURLY HAIR TYPES – creates shiny, soft curls

Every curly dreams of healthy, defined, soft, manageable curls…Cashmere Curls is your dream come true! Formulated with pure Cashmere Extract, Certified Organic Aloe Leaf and Coconut Milk, Cashmere Curls softens, strengthens, repairs, defines, and moisturizes damaged tresses leaving them bouncy, shiny and silky smooth. By bonding to the hair shaft, Cashmere Curls strengthens 3 layers of the hair thus enhancing the curl pattern.

How To Use:

  • Use alone as a curl defining, sheen enhancing, softening, and strengthening styler (fine-medium textured curls).
  • Use under your favorite CURLS styler to soften, hydrate, enhance curl definition (thick, kinky textured curls).
  • Mixed with your favorite CURLS conditioner to deep treat your tresses.
Ingredients:
Botanically Infused H2o, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Keratin – Cashmere Extract, Certified Organic Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Certified Organic Anthemis Nobilis (Flower) Extract, Certified Organic Coconut Extract, Bean Tree, Lactamide MEA, Acetamide MEA, Polyquaternium-7, Polysorbate 80,Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Lactic Acid, Diisopropyl Adipate, Polyquaternium-10, Phenoxyethanol, Natural Fragrance.

(to the point where my hair was white) just to get a better idea of the type of hold/defined curls I could get with these and I was pleasantly surprised. I used my diffuser because I didn’t have time to air dry but these are my mid day results (I should have taken some pics right after use but I will next time).

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

30 Nov

Quick Puff & Flat Twist

1. On washed, conditioned & detangled wet hair, I parted a 2 inch section of hair in the front and did a flat twist from right to left.

2. With added conditioner on the back section I brushed back the sides into a puff on the top of my head.

3. Tuck in the end of the flat twist into the puff’s ponytail holder & you’re DONE!

🙂

Scarves & More Scarves Inspiration!

8 Oct

This look was semi-inspired by a post on A Curl’s Best FriendScarf Bun and Swoop Tutorial
Wash & Go inspired by Naptural85 (however the overnight idea doesn’t work for me too well because my hair takes for LIFE to dry; I think this was the 2nd day of an old wash & go):
1. Part hair into 4, 2 strand twists
2. In shower, undo each twist & finger detangle under water, add Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner then twist back up in shower
3. After doing each section, dry with t-shirt while still getting ready
4. I undo the twists & shake ’em out in the car before work
I bought this pink polka dot scarf from the Gap back in high school, shout out to the Prime Outlets in Williamsburg!
Decided to bring it back out in a different way (I’ve never worn it as a bow in my hair) kinda cute!  Yah for shopping for more scarves soon! I love her bigger scarf hairstyles too, take a look: A Curl’s Best Friend Hairstyles!

Corinne Bailey Rae on Curlynikki.com

4 Oct

If you didn’t get a chance to read this article yesterday on Curlynikki.com take a look at Corinne Bailey Rae the sultry singer & sassy natural hair DIVA!!

Corinne Bailey Rae – “I wanted to Start a natural Hair Site!”

Oooooo and maybe I’m late but Corinne did a remake of the CLASSIC Prince song, “I Wanna be Your Lover”
Girl you better go head and recognize the musical genius that IS Prince! lol

My fav points:

“So when I went to University, I had this natural hair style- like a tiny afro, really, really short hair- and I’d always wear jeans and a leather jacket and everyone thought I was a Black Panther.”

“What I do now is wash it, put the conditioner in and detangle it with a big paddle brush which takes 40 minutes… it takes a while. I do it from the ends to the roots and then I put it in 4 or so plaits– I plait the front section and then one in the crown and two at the sides. I leave that for a day or a day and a half…. it has to be a day where you’re just hanging out at home. When I take them down, it’s in those loose kinks from the plaits, but it’s still a bit wet, so then my natural curl kind of comes back in a bit and it’s a combination between those kind of kinks and my normal curls. That’s my staple style.”

“Obviously eating well and drinking water helps. It’s also a myth that Afro hair can’t grow long and it can. You just have to give it time, plus it’s growing in a spiral and it’s takes a bit to show length.”

“I really like that website Lecoil. I think she has some really good pictures on there and it’s really inspiring as well. The thing I found most depressing about that Chris Rock documentary Good Hair was that lawyer. She had this very beautiful afro and the other black girls were like, ‘I think your hair is cute and all but when you become a lawyer no one is going to take you seriously because of your hair’, and she was like, ‘yeah I know I’m going to have to change it when I become a lawyer’. So, so sad. So the thing I love about Lecoil is that when you click on a picture, you find that this person is the CEO of a company, or a journalist, or the creator of a website! I think it’s really important to show more and more people in influential positions that just let their hair be.”

“But you know what, I have stages where I just put Vaseline in my hair if it’s dry. I put the Vaseline in it and comb it through. I remember after using it for a while, I went to my hairdresser and she said, ‘your hair is in really good condition, what have you been using?’ and I told her! She couldn’t believe it. I like to put essential oil in it and it gives it a really nice smell. It’s cheap and I think that’s a myth… that you have to use really expensive products and you don’t. You can add stuff like Olive Oil, Almond oil or things you just find in the health food store to help expensive products last longer. Experiment is what I say. What works for one person may not work for you.”

LOVE her hair & this article! What’s your fav Corinne Bailey Rae song?

My new fav is this Prince remake, “I Wanna Be Your Lover”!  and her song “Closer”

Everyone loves a SALE!!!

26 Sep

So, if you know me you know I LOVE sales, getting something on discount or that GREAT feeling when something rings up on sale at the register & you didn’t even realize it was on sale?!?!?

So, I read this facebook post last week:

Walgreens will have the Schick Quattro Razors on sale for $8.99 starting on Sunday 9/25. You will also get a $5 Register Reward when you buy 1 making this FREE + a Small Money Maker after the coupons!

I tried this yesterday, I paid $3.99 for the razor because I couldn’t get the register reward until I paid for it and then I would be able to use the $5 register reward on any next purchase that wasn’t a Schick product they said.

Then, I went to another Walgreens and got a pack of the refills so I’d get another $5 register reward (I actually needed a razor too and a razor & refills for $3.99 each is an excellent deal). Soooo I was able to get the razor, the re-fill for $3.99 each and two $5 register rewards.

Then, I used the $10 of register rewards to get my fav: Fantasia IC hair gel (was originally $4.99, on sale for $3.99 which I didn’t know until they rang it up!) that I use all the time…

AND

I got a new bottle of Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner  (was $9.99).  So, for the gel and conditioner together I paid $3.98!!!  I was amped about my $27 savings (all of the stuff together would have been $39 & I paid $12)!!

Tip: check www.coupons.com on a regular basis for stuff you normally buy that you can get a discount on and check out Passion for Saving blog for more savings tips/discounted items that you may not know about!

What sites do you go to for sales, discounts or coupons to get your DEALS?

Happy saving!!

Case of the Shady Hair Salon…!

23 Sep

Last night a good friend of mine who has been natural for YEARS sent me a text message:

Thu, Sep 22, 2011 8:34pm “Word to the wise…if you ever go to the Dominicans [to get a blow out]…take your own shampoo and conditioner…I definitely think I’ve been had!”

Thu, Sep 22, 2011 8:35pm “I just washed out my blow out that I got Sat. and my curls are w/o a doubt MUCH looser than when I went in! BUT my hair is softer so that’s a bonus 🙂 “

Thu, Sep 22, 2011 8:36pm “But I’m certain by my new texture/loose curls that they didn’t just use shampoo/condit in my hair!”
Of course I’m freaking out & had a million & 1 questions for her:
Did they put a relaxer in her hair? What did they do? Why didn’t she ask more questions? This a crime! Can she sue the salon?
So, this is what happened:

D: “It cost $28. This is my first time I’ve had…[a Dominican blow-out on] my hair. They washed, blow dried and flat ironed; no grease was used, only a lil light spray. When I went in, I knew (or thought) I needed a trim…but when the lady was done…my ends were SO sleek and straight, I was surprised! She recommended I get a deep condition, next time (that was probably a code word for PERM, lol!) But my hair was SO shiny and healthy looking I was too hyped and was just like, “alright!” But she will never get the chance [to do her “deep condition”]! Lol I immediately felt and saw a difference in my hair/curls right after my wash tonight. But I AM NOT complaining about how soft it is! :). As long as it doesn’t fall out, I’m good!”

So, basically after getting the blowout, her hair texture was much different than before, “looser curls, softer etc.” while washing & after being blow dried again. This may be just a matter of her having straightened her hair a bit much (she was getting it washed, blow-dried and flat ironed by her regular hair stylist but all summer she did without the flat iron and washed, blow dried & did a rod set), OR maybe they did use some type of texturizer in her hair.  If the answer is the latter…then I would be highly upset.  Who wants to have chemicals, whether light or heavy, put in their hair without them asking for it? I work hard to keep my hair natural and am not about to have to start over because someone thinks this ‘chemical’ will make it easier for her to do MY hair.  My friend had a much better reaction than I probably would have…they would have seen me back in the shop looking at products, ingredients and interrogating everyone! LOL, this is my main issue, when her new growth starts to come in…will it be a totally different texture than the rest of her hair because of this incident? What do you think?

Word to the wise ladies: Not only should you research your products, but ALSO research the salons you go to and ask questions, don’t worry if they seem bothered by it…YOU are the customer.  All of this will help us to KEEP our curls 24seven.

Have you been to a shady hair salon and had a bad experience?

Hairstyle Fumble Recovery!

20 Sep

This past Friday I washed my hair with Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo I loved the smell all day and how it kept my hair feeling soft afterwards, clean but not stripped.  I just wore it in a puff to work that morning.  My intention was to do 2-strand twists as a protective style when I got home…however I was informed that we had to go to a HS football game…which ended up being a blowout…womp womp.  Nonetheless I had like an hour or so to do this…

So, I rushed and did the front half in 2 strands, then tried to pin up the back…FUMBLE!

I think I didn’t even take a pic of the back pinned up because it looked crazy, but who cares I’ve been out of High School for almost 10 years now…wasn’t trying to impress a soul.  SO once I got home I tried to recover my hairstyle fumble and came up with this for the meeting I had the next day:

Needless to say I’ve been happy with this because it’s easy.  I sprayed some tea tree oil on my scalp at  night, wear my satin scarf, wake up and do a type of flat twist gathering all the 2 strands down the left side and tuck the ends under each other on top of my head. I may use 1 or 2 bobby pins to secure the back larger flat twist end underneath on the same left side. But other than that, it’s a quick get up & go.  Due to the rain today I will wait another day to do the twist out & rock that but…this works for me!

What are your go-to quick styles or styles that you’ve created from hairstyle fumbles???
